Sobriety Connection

A Healthy Lifestyle

Health and Fitness

Sobriety Connection emphasizes whole health. We feel that a healthy lifestyle depends on a person’s mental, physical and spiritual health. Due to this, we feel it is important to provide our residents with the necessary resources to maintain a healthy lifestyle during their stay.

Nutritionist Services: According to a recent study, one in four addicts is malnourished and half are vitamin deficient. Due to this, our facility works closely with an experienced nutritionist to ensure our residents are eating healthy.

Substance and alcohol abuse can often deplete the body of essential vitamins and minerals, while simultaneously interfering with appetite. In some cases, physiological changes can occur to the body during and after substance abuse. When using drugs or alcohol some general side effects occur, which can include: consuming less food, skipping meals or choosing foods that are less nutritious, increasing the speed at which your body uses energy, loss of nutrients especially through vomiting and diarrhea, and significant gut damage which makes it difficult to digest and absorb nutrients.

Dietary Plans

During recovery, residents will stick to a nutrient-dense diet, which focuses on replenishing vitamins and minerals, as well as balancing serotonin levels. Vitamin B deficiencies are common in those who are recovering from alcohol addiction, as well as vitamin C and mineral deficiencies. During recovery, residents will follow a diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals. A nutritionist may personalize a diet based on individual needs. However, a recovery focused diet usually includes: Complex carbohydrates, including brown rice, legumes, vegetables and fruit, calcium-rich foods, which includes nuts and seeds, leafy greens and tofu, high quality protein, including fish, tofu or meat, healthy fats, such as avocado, olive oil, flax and fish. In addition to diet, residents are often prescribed daily probiotics to repair gut health and help with digestion. Your nutritionist may also recommend food rich in probiotics, as well as prebiotics. These foods include:

  • Yogurt and kefir
  • Kombucha
  • Sourdough bread
  • Fermented vegetables
  • Onions
  • Garlic
  • Artichokes
